A.      Welcome

Welcome and congratulations on your marriage decisions and plans.

We give thanks to God because you have decided to marry in the Catholic Church.  The Church of Saint Joseph is profoundly happy for you and your families as you begin your preparation for marriage.  Thank you for giving us the opportunity to participate in the preparation and the celebration of your marriage.

Develop Your Relationship

We want to help you in the development of your relationship as a couple and of your relationship with God.  Our objective is to prepare you not only for your wedding day but also for married life which you will experience together in this Sacrament of Matrimony.

A Positive Future for You

Our process is a sign of the Church’s concern to assure a positive future for married life and the family.  The current divorce statistics are a clear indication that in our world many couples do not realize the hopes they had for a stable and happy marriage.

Required Preparation Time.

The preparation time varies, but it is usually six months before the wedding.

Truly Taking Time to Prepare

The time of preparation should not be seen simply as a time of waiting, but as a true time of preparation.  These six months guarantee the couple adequate time to participate in and to benefit from various stages in the process of marriage preparation.  In case some indicators of problems or obstacles are discovered during the preparation, the couple can take more time to resolve their difficulties through alternatives like counseling or church canonical procedures.

Couples married civilly for many years may possibly have a different preparation process adapted to their situation. This will be established after the first meeting with the Deacon or the Priest.

B1.   Preparation in One Parish to Be Married Another

For various reasons, for example, distance, you can

·         prepare yourself at another parish to get married at Saint Joseph Parish,  Sunnyside,

·         or you can prepare yourself at Saint Joseph Parish, Sunnyside to get married in another parish.

Simply make an appointment with a priest or deacon at Saint Joseph Sunnyside to talk about these possibilities. In the meeting with the priest or deacon at Sunnyside, you will review together the form at the end of this packet : Form for Preparation in Another Parish in order to Marry in Sunnyside.

B2.   To marry in another diocese, or to prepare in another diocese to marry here

When your preparation and documents are complete,

1.      the parish where you prepared will mail the documents to the bishop of the diocese where you prepared,

2.      and the bishop of the diocese where you prepared will mail these documents to the bishop of the diocese where you are going to have your wedding.

This takes time, so plan ahead.

C.      Requirements of State and Church

State Requirements (Note:  You will need a current photo ID to get a marriage license.)

Benton County information : Prosser, Benton County Courthouse, 620 Market Street, Phone : (509) 786-5616  or http://benton.municipalcms.com/pView.aspx?id=1454&catid=45

Yakima County Information : 128 North 2nd Street, Room 117, Yakima, Washington 98901, PO Box 12570, Yakima, Washington 98909-12570, Phone : (509) 574-1330, FAX (509) 574-1341

Saint Joseph Church, Sunnyside Requirements

1.                  Fulfill the state requirements.

2.                  Request a wedding date for (1) the church or (2) chapel at least six months before the date you want for your wedding.

3.                  Once you have a date approved by the Pastor in consultation with the Parish Office, you must make payments according to the chart in #14 below.

4.                  We ask that you be registered and active members of the Parish.  If you come from another Parish, we will ask you to bring a written permission from the Pastor of that Parish.

5.                  Participate in the talks and marriage preparation meetings during the months leading up to the wedding.

6.                  Participate in a retreat for couples.

7.      Although it is not an absolute requirement that Catholics be confirmed before they get married in the Catholic Church, the Sacrament of Confirmation before marriage is something that the Church urges strongly.  Talk to the priest about how to do it.  The Code of Canon law says Catholics who have not received the sacrament of confirmation should receive it before they are admitted to marriage if they can do this without serious inconvenience (Canon 1065 Paragraph 1).

60 Days before the wedding each one should present the following

1.       a baptism certificate issued within the last six months from the church where the person was baptized.

2.       a witness who will testify that he or she is free to marry.

4 weeks before the wedding   Bring the wedding license from the county.

D.      Our Program of Support and Preparation

We have good resources to help you improve your relationship, your mutual understanding, and each one´s self-understanding.  A good and solid marriage is founded on two people who are healthy in body and spirit.  Let us pray that you be honest and sincere with each other, revealing the authentic love that God shows forth in you.

About a Six Month Process

Our process of preparation is a series of meetings and encounters for about six months to help you to reflect over the critical themes for a good marriage.

Step #6       Meet #2 with Priest or Deacon to Review Plan for Wedding

Step #7       Wedding Rehearsal

Step #8       Wedding

F.      The Wedding Rehearsal

Plan and Rehearse Wedding

·         Plan Wedding with Priest or Deacon 1 - 2 weeks before wedding

·         Rehearsal

The Required Wedding Rehearsal.

The required wedding rehearsal is one or two days before the wedding. You have various options of what time it will be.  All those who are going to be in the wedding procession, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, presenters of the rings and arras, maid of honor, etc., should be present at the rehearsal.

Plan ahead. There are no confessions immediately before or after rehearsal or the wedding.

Ordinary Confession / Reconciliation times at St Joseph Sunnyside are 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm Saturdays, and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays by appointment

G.     The Wedding Day

1.       Hours available for the time of the wedding.

During the week almost anytime.  Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m.

2.       Confession / Reconciliation a Week Before the Wedding

We unite our prayers with yours, and we would like to see you each Sunday at Mass, hoping that at the conclusion of your marital preparation you will be reconciled with God through the Sacrament of Reconciliation / Confession.

There are no Confessions / Reconciliation the day of the rehearsal nor on the day of the wedding.

3.       Receive Communion at Your Wedding.

To receive Communion during the wedding Mass, each must present a certificate of their First Communion issued within the last six months from the Parish where they received it.

4.       Invite a Priest or Deacon from Another Parish to Do the Wedding

You are welcome to invite a priest or deacon from another Parish to do the wedding, but you must fill out the form asking for permission 60 days before the wedding, The Parish needs to follow up on that form before responding to give permission or no.

 At the Wedding

1.       When one is not a catholic

Eucharist should not be celebrated in a marriage wedding with the Catholic when one person is not baptized.  Only the Liturgy of the Word is permitted.  The Eucharist can be celebrated in a wedding of a Catholic and a person baptized with non-catholic.

2.       Ministers during the liturgy

The ministers should have the spiritual qualities and gifts necessary to carry out their ministry, and not simply participate because of a social relationship with the couple.  The Eucharistic Ministers have to be Catholic and Eucharistic Ministers in a Catholic Parish.  Lectors can be people qualified from other Christian faith traditions.

3.       Choir and music groups

The music is an essential part of the liturgical celebration and only religious songs are permitted during the Mass.  Other kinds of music can be played at the reception.

You may bring your own music group or singers or you may get in contact with one of our choirs. Whichever option you choose, you still must pay the office of St Joseph Parish the Choir deposit of $150.  If you don’t contract any choir or haven’t paid your choir, the deposit is not recoverable. If you do have a choir, you may pick up this deposit in the church office ten days after the celebration of your wedding.

4.       Flowers

The flowers placed in the church must be natural flowers.  We ask a donation of $50.00 and the ministry of the decoration of the church will make two floral arrangements.  If you want any particular color for the flower, please communicate this to the Parish secretary.

5.       Photos and videos

It is preferable to have a professional photographer and this photographer should communicate with the priest a few minutes before the wedding.  Photos and videos should be taken with discretion, without interrupting or distracting the celebration of the Mass.

The photographer should not

1.      block the people seated in the pews from seeing the priest, pulpit, or altar

2.      go up on the steps of the sanctuary

3.       be standing closer than 10 feet from the Priest or Deacon

6.       Security

Because of certain security norms to avoid accidents and to maintain the church clean, it is not permitted to toss rice, seeds, or flower petals, inside or outside the church.  You will lose your deposit.

After the wedding

All the decorations that you have placed in the church must be taken down immediately after the wedding.

H.     Our prayers and our support are with you

We unite our prayers with yours, and we would like to see you each Sunday at Mass, hoping that at the conclusion of your marital preparation you will be reconciled with God through the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession).

We give thanks to God because you have decided to get married in the Catholic Church.  We are profoundly excited with you and your families at the beginning of your marital preparation.

I.       Prayer for the Couple

Thank you, Lord,

for the great gift of love

which has brought us such joy.

Help us to continue loving reverently, patiently and generously,

          seeing you in each other.

Guide us,

so that we may continue to discover you in the other person.

Illuminate us,

so that our understanding and our compassion

          deepen and mature.

Help us to forget our own selves,

so we can live in and for each other,

so that we can truly be one.

In these hurried days of preparation,

give us peace and the calm to reflect on the moment of the                     Sacrament,

when you seal and sanctify our promises,

uniting us in a deep intimacy forever.

Give us the ability to know

that soon our unique love will be taken and transformed

          into a love undivided,

and then we will no longer be a man and a woman in love,

but husband and wife,

an image of Christ and his Church,

with the special right to supernatural assistance,

and a special commission to create love in each other,

                   in our sons and daughters,

                   and in God’s family.

In joys and in sadness,

in riches and in poverty,

in sickness and in health,

may our love grow in your divine love

until death do us part.  Amen.
